THE DERBY GAME
The first known soccer ?derby? game took place in 1880 in England. It
was between Darwen and Blackburn Rovers and the match was described as
?derby? because both sides were located within 4 miles from each other.
Throughout the years, more and more games acquired the name derby. There
is one rule, if a game is to be called this way. Both teams have to be
located very close - in a geographical sense - and it is best when sides
come from the same town or city.
As there are two soccer teams in Debica, obviously a game between them
has the full right to be called a derby. However, most fans from our
town do not even remember a game like this, because the last one took
place twenty one years ago, in 1983.
October 10, 2004 was a date much anticipated for all fans of Wisloka. On
that Sunday, at 3 PM, started THE GAME - KS Wisloka Debica, a visitor,
was playing LKS Igloopol Debica - a host. Unfortunately, our beloved
team - Wisloka - lost this important game. But on the stands white and
green fans were more numerous and more visible.
This is the description of this unforgettable event, written by one of
Wisloka?s fans.
On the day of the Derby, Wisloka?s fans were gathering on Debica?s
central market square since morning. There, one could buy tickets for
the game of which, until 12:30, we sold around 550.
As the time passed by, more and more Wisloka?s suporters were showing up
on the square. Most of them wore a scarf, a T-shirt or a hat - obviously
all these garments were white and green. Later on, two buses full of
supporters joined us. One came a long way from Zabrze, carrying fans of
our best ally - Gornik Zabrze. The second one came from Ropczyce, with
dudes from our fan-club.
The atmosphere on the square was very good. People were singing and
drinking beer as well as other beverages. Police presence was noticeable,
but cops were not disturbing us. Despite the fact that some Igloopol?s
supporters usually cross the square on their way to the stadium, none of
them were ever noticed. The center of the town as well as areas around
rail station were patrolled by Wisloka?s and Gornik?s fans, but with no
success.
It is difficult to assess our number on that day, but it is most
probable that altogether there were about 750 of Wisloka?s fanatics. At
about 1 pm the crowd started out slowly towards Igloopol?s stadium.
Alongside us there were 80 guys from Zabrze, 30 from Ropczyce and 20
from Pilzno.
On the way to the stadium nothing exciting happened. At one moment we
saw from a distance a group of guys dressed in white and blue, running
away in panic. It soon turned out that a bunch of hooligans from Zabrze
wanted to get acquainted with them, but Igloopol?s fans were not eager
to get to know our friends? fists.
When we reached the guests? gate, the situation got chaotic. There was
only one narrow passage for such a huge crowd and it took a long time
before all of us entered the stands. A few minutes before the first blow
of the referee, our section was filled with Wisloka?s fanatics. We
displayed on the fence three our flags and one of Gornik?s. We also had
ten big white-and-green flags on sticks, which we fly for the whole 90
minutes.
There also were two huge banners: IGLOOPOLICE 997 and something ?nice?
about the mayor of our town, who is also the head of Igloopol.
On the other side of the stadium, opposite to us, we saw a group of
about 100 Igloopol?s fans. Only after a while they were joined by a
large group of their buddies. Altogether there were around 400 of them,
with some flags displayed on the fence.
During the game, both sides presented a top-quality ultra show. Our
presentation is generally regared as better, however guys from Igloopol
should also be praised for their efforts. At the beginning of the game
we threw out lots of paper streamers. We also had lettering WISLOKA
DEBICA, cut out of foamed polystyrene, white and green cardboards and
plenty of fireworks, including 130 flares. Some of them were thrown on
the field, which interrupted the game for a while.
During the game we were chanting numeorus songs, but our cheering
sometimes got out of control, for a simple reason - on that day there
were far too many of us. In the second half of the game we burned shirts
and scarves of Igloopol, which had been displayed on the fence. Once in
a while somebody tried to initiate smear songs against Igloopol, but
hardy anybody joined in.
Unfortunately, our team lost this important game, which was a sad
surprise for everybody. Our players deserved victory - they were a
better team throughout the game, with numerous occacions to score a goal,
but it was Igloopol that managed to score once and this settled the
whole match.
The way back towards the railroad station was calm and later the group
separated. Some people went home, but majority decided to hit the main
square. As far as I know, a few riots happened there with Wisloka?s fans
fighting the police as well as fans of Igloopol.
Generally, the derby was a great show of our strenght and ability to
organize. Never in the history of our town so many fans were supporting
a team and our superiority in all fields was visible to all observers.
Great thanks to all our friends from Zabrze and other towns for coming
by and joining us. Thank you again!
THE DERBY GAME - SECOND LEG, MAY 21, 2005
Unfortunately, the second leg of this important game again took place at the Municipal Stadium (former statium of LKS Igloopol), because the police stated that Wisloka?s Stadium was not safe enough for such an event.
Like in the fall, this time we also gathered on Debica?s main square. Altogether there were about 1000 of us (including around 60 friends who came from Zabrze plus our fan clubs - 50 lads from Ropczyce and 25 lads from Pilzno). About an hour before the game we started off towards the stadium. There was some mess at the gates because only one entrance was open and the whole process was very slow.
Because of a broken loudspeaker we had to initiate chants by shouting them which was a real problem as the crowd was too huge.
The first half of the game was calm. During the break a bunch of people hit a nearby store. On their way they met some fans of Igloopol, giving them a few punches and taking a few scarves. As the police showed up immediately, our guys returned to the stands.
In the second half from part of stands occupied by Igloopol stands some 2-3 lads entered the field but they were quickly removed by the security. We noticed this and after breaking the fence around 40-50 of us entered the field. Guys from security got a heavy beating so the police had to help them by shooting rubber bullets at us. Three security guys ended up in hospital - one of them with a broken jaw.
We went back to the stands but the police kept on shooting so the crowd hid behind the benches. After a while the situation calmed down, lads returned to the stands and we took our flags off the fence (Igloopol?s fans did the same). Then we started off 165 flares of which some flied toward the cops who in return started to shoot again. The game was terminated for another time and after this interval the remaining part of the match was calm.
Together with us about 1000 fans of Wisloka sitting on neighboring stands supported our team by singing and clapping their hands. We all sang very loudly and it all came out really great.
After the game, on our way back, there was a brawl with the police - we destroyed one of their vehicles, a few lads were caught and incarcerated. In the evening we had a huge party, hosting our friends from Zabrze.
It is hard to tell the number of Igloopol?s fans. According to us, there were around 550 of them, standing within a yard from each other which gave an impression of a larger crowd. Generally speaking, the game was a very interesting one - both from hooligan and ultras point of view. As far as ultras is concerned, we did not present all planned elements, but still we were not worse than Igloopol?s fans. All ultras stuff was prepared by Ultra Fanatics 04 with support of The Association OUR KS and fans of Wisloka from Chicago, USA.
